Cutters Close is a small street in Narborough,
just to the south of Leicester, UK. Within this area, there
is a small cul-de-sac of twelve houses, each year the residents
patiently erect a display of which most villages would be
proud. Since lights and outside decorations first became available,
the houses in this area have decked their walls and windows
with decoration of some kind; and as the availability of decorations
grew, their displays became more and more elaborate, culminating
in a masterful Christmas display which attracts visitors from
all over the area.
In 2003 the neighbours decided that, with all the visitors
to their humble close, they could raise money for charity
and so their quest began. In the first year they managed with
the aid of Enderby
Brass Band to raise £250, an admirable amount,
in 2004, however, with the aid of Croft
Silver Band, they raised a staggering £650.
However, in 2005 the residents really pushed the boat out
and with the aid of Croft
Silver Band, Santa and Rudolph from Leicestershire
Fire and Rescue Services and Tony Wadsworth from
BBC
Radio Leicester amongst others all targets were
broken and a staggering £1219 was raised for Rainbows.
This year the chosen Charity is The
County Air Ambulance Trust.
Knowing that the money is heading towards such a laudable
cause, we ask only that you come along on December 17th and
donate your time. Don’t think however, that all you
will see are some house lights, this close is all out for
Christmas. Each year they painstaking rotate lights so that
the displays are not the same each year – so even if
you went last year go again – you’ll not be disappointed.
While the lights themselves will be on for the entire month
of December, and while you are free to visit and see them
at any point, you will miss out if you do not attend the biggest
social event of the winter. So what is there to see? As well
as beautifully decorated walls, there are gardens filled with
wonder of Christmas; the fire brigade are hopefully bringing
Santa with them (if he is available) to see all the good boys
and girls; and if you are really good there are tours of the
various lights as well as activities for children; all of
which is accompanied by the skill of Croft Silver Band, there
to imbue the festival cheer into all who attend. Traditional
refreshments such as mulled wine, mince pies and sausage rolls
will also be available.
It will be the social event of the festive season and one
you would be sorry to miss. The event starts at 5.00pm. Should
you not, for any reason be able to attend this joyous occasion
but still wish to see the wonder of this close, then feel
free to take a drive down throughout December. For children,
Santa will be there on most nights, weather permitting of
course! (Don’t forget Santa is 400 years old!)
It is the season to be jolly; the season of goodwill; the
season of giving; so join the people of Cutters Close, let
them give to you the gift of light and in return give a gift
to those whose need it most.
Merry Christmas from all at Cutters
Close.
